Dieppe Aflame As Result Of Double Barrage
London, Aug. 20. A large part of Dieppe was in flames when the Allied Commando forces left it yesterday. Eye-witness accounts of the battle telephoned to Vichy described hand-to-hand fighting in the burning streets under a rain of shells from British artillery. The population remained cairn while street fighting -raged between the invaders and the German forces. French nurses tended the wounded of both sides under fire. Clanging French fire engines rushed to fight the fires as one building after another burst into flames when the town was caught between the Allied and German artillery barrages. A Vichy spokesman said that 30 French people were killed and many wounded in street fighting in Dieppe. According to other French sources the German losses were extremely heavy. Describing how prisoners were taken a Canadian officer said: "We were quite I surprised. We thought they would fight | to the last. but they gave in and came | along quietly. One prisoner was aj Dutchman who had been forced into the , German forces. He surrendered at thej first opportunity."
