New Tactical School Opens For Training of Officers

A New Zealand tactical school was opened yesterday by Lieut.-Generat E. Puttick, chief of New Zealand military forces. The school, which will be attended by students from all parts of New Zealand, is to give instruction to officers in field tactics. AU the instructors have had recent experience in the Middle East. The instructors and students will live at the school, which has study and lecture rooms. Outdoor practises will be a feature of the course. As each draft oi 6tudents finishes the course and passes out it will be replaced by another. Opening the school, Lieut.-General Puttick emphasised the importance of tactics in modern war, illustrating his address with many examples from the Middle East. He urged instructors. to encourage the officers to develop mitiative. The army was often called a machine, and so it was to _ the extent that each part dovetailed with the other, but Ke 6tressed the huinan factors of sKiu> coolness and cunning. If there was one fault with the British method ofwaging war it was that they were lnclined to think there were Marquess of Queens-' bury rules. Their enemies were skilfujj and ruthless, and they had to matcn cunning with greater cunnmg. i
