Need For Extra Classrooms At Vogeltown to be Pressed
Further representations pressing the urgent need for two additional classrooms at Vogeltown school are to be made by the Taranaki Education Board to the Education Department. The board at its monthly meeting at New Plymouth decided to take this action after advice was received from the Director of Education Dr. C. E. Beeby, asking whether. in view of the difliculty of putting new works in hand, the board could secure another portable building for transfer to Vogeltown to provide in the- meantime any additional accqmmodation needed. Plans for two additional rooms were prepared, the architect, Mr. C. H. Moore, said. It was also stated that negotiations for the purchase of 3% acres as additional playground were completed. Grants were approved by the Education Department for additional accommodation at Pukearuhe, out-offices at the Eltham manual school and a basketball and drill area at Bird and Omata schools. The board decided to apply to the department for a subsidy of £200 towarde the cost of providing a visual education and free room at Westown, the board to provide some assistance and the committee to find about £400 in cash and free labour. Additions to Lepperton schoo! were almost completed, the committee having provided labour for extra concrete work, reported the architect. The portable room was removed to the board's workshop. An additional classroom and cloak-room at Auroa were completed, but there was still the old type of residenee there. The Auroa committee had done considerable work by working bees. Pukearuhe additions would be put in hand in the holidays, and it was possible the school might remain closed for a further week. Labour at the eommittee's cost was being provided for work at the Welbourn basketball and drill area. Plans, with an application for a grant, were forwarded to the department for an additional room to the Huiakama residenee. The architect was authorised to deal with matters at Mangatoki, Norfolk Road, Okaiawa and Manaia, recommended for attention by Dr. J. H. Blakelock, medical offieer of health. Matters at Toko. Dudley, Midhirst. Vogeltown, Omata, Tikorangi, Croydon and Mangorei were referred to the architect with power to act. Application is to be made to the department for £1 for £1 subsidy up to £80 for the establishment of learn to swim baths. It was decided to ask the Uruti school committee for suggestions regarding the possibility of procuring a more suitable site for IHp srhool.
" A grant of £5 was made towards the cost of supplying tools for light woodwork classes at Kahui school. Because of the absence from Mellington of the supervisor of special classes, the department was unabie to obtain her opinion on the establishment of a special class at the Fitzroy school, the Director of Education wrote.
