Cruiser Canberra Sunk In Action In the Solomons
Bulk of ship's complement rescued. London, Aug. 20. The loss of the Australian cruiser Ganberra is announced in a communique from General MacArthur's headquarters. The Canberra is the third and largest Australian cruiser lost in this war, the others being the Sydney and the Perth. She was sunk while in action with ViceAdmiral Robert Ghormley's forces in the? Solomons Islands battle. The bulk of the ship's complement oi 815 were saved but the following casualties are officially announced: Missing believed killed, 74; died of wounds, 10; wounded, 109. Among the dead is the captain. The Canberra, which was commanded by Captain Frank Gitting, was of 10,000 tons, and was completed in 1928. She carried eight eight-inch guns and three aircraft. For years she was the flagship of the Australian Navy. During the present war she had performed excellerit escort work, particularly in the Indiao Ocean, where she destroyed two armed raiders and two supply ships.
