N.P. Shows Good Result In Collection of Waste

In five months 65 tons of waste paper has been dispatched from New Plymouth to depots and mills in New Zealand and more than £150 worth of other paper and scrap metal has been disposed of locally. This represents a return to the patriotic funds of over £300. The organised reclamation of waste produets by the New Plymouth waste materials reclamation committee was begun when a depot was opened in Devon Street in the middle of Waste paper collected, sorted, balepacked and sent from New Plymouth to the Salvation Army depot at Wellington and to the mills at Whakatane and Mataura is'65 tons 14cwt 3qr. This represents 280 bales,. and two full railway trucks of books and magazines, etc., packed in cartons. Credits expected from this return which are still to come from the National Council for the Reclamation of Waste will add approximately £150 " more to the patriotic funds. The cost of collecting, sorting, packing and dispatch of the materials has not .exceeded £10. The principal item of expenditure has been the limited amount of petrol to enable the committee to run the light truck ient by Rowfe and Healy Ltd. for the collection of waste which people have not been able to take to the depot. Without this the collecting which has been done would have been practically impossible. Mr. H. J. Butler, chairman of the committee, explained yesterday that the New Plymouth town carriers had carted the bales of paper from the depot to the railway station. A good response has been made to theappeal for waste non-ferrous metals, but every ounce of this tyipe of material ia required. The committee cannot deal in wrought iron, steel or old tin cans. It appears likely that the committee's efforts over the first 12 months of its work will yield a return to patriotic funds of over £600. A drive is now on for waste rubber and will continue intensively till the end of the month. by which time it is hoped to collect all present accumulations of this vital product. i _ —
