Factory Supply Zoning Causes Dissatisfaction

The suggestion that, to conserve, tyres, milk or cream supply should be zoned to the nearest factory was not as simple as it looked, said the chairman of directors of the Mangorei Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd., Mr. A. Hall, at the annual meeting yesterday. To fix a boundary on the main road between two companies, he claimed, would not have the desired effect, but would rather increase transport mileage. It would entail the elimination of round trips and cause motor-lorries to return by the same route. •- At present the boundary between the Mangorei and Moa companies was under discussion, said Mr. Hall. There had been

a certain overlapping in neutral territory which both companies had used in the past. The Mangorei directors now offered to collect the cream over that area and to deliver to the Moa company the cream from its suppliers. In this way each company would retain its supply and considerable mileage would be saved. That offer had, however, had not been accepted by a committee comprising Messrs. C. E. Varooe, of the Transport Department, with Messrs. W. Crawford and D. Hull, of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture, in an advisory capacity. Their finding gave the Mangorei company Egmont Road, on which the Moa company had some suppliers. and gave the Moa company Upland Road and a mile of the main road, on which Mangorei had 16 suppliers and Moa two suppliers. The Mangorei directors appealed against that decision, which did not save any transport mileage, said Mr. Hall. The position was to have been investigated and a final decision given by the North Island zoning officer, Mr. H. M. Christie, but his visit was postponed and the matter was held in 'abeyance. The offer by the Mangorei company should provide a fair solution of the difficulty, for it would save mileage, which was all that was asked, Mr. Hall emphasised. No two transport operators were allowed to run on any byroad with general carrying, and no lorry was allowed to run on a byroad with less than two tons, said Mr. S. Johnson, in stating that the district between Rahotu and Waitara was zoned. He would continue carting all cream to the factory. 1 Suppliers expressed surprise that they would be unable to obtain small quantities of goods by the cream lorry, the chairman stating that the directors would take that matter up.
