Taking Over of Hotel For A.N.A. Club Suggested
Urgency for the provision of a larger club at New Plymouth for use by members of the armed services and returned men was again emphasised last night at a meeting of the New Plymouth borough and Taranaki county patriotic committee. Quoting it as a suggestion from "a man in the street," one member suggested a hotel or a boarding-house should be taken over for the purpose — it had been done in America, it was said— while another proposal was that the old Presbyterian Church in Devon Street should bc used. Mr. C. E. Bellringer said that though use of the new library site had been declined, the provincial council was still investigating possibilities. Expenditure involved would have to be within limits, he added, but any suggestions for a solution of the problem would be welcomed, Visitors to the A.N.'A. club at New Plymouth increased from 500 in May to 990 In July, reported Mr. W. L. Wagstaff. The committee made the club a further grant of £20. The New Plymouth Returned Services Association had decided to pav the club £5 a month from April 1, it was stated, the position to be reviewed" in six months.
