APPROACHING £4000

TARANAKI SPITFIRE FUND APPEAL CLOSING TO-DAY With £3808 16s lld in hand, a total of more than £4000 is expected in the Taranaki Spitfire fund before it closes to-night. Several substantial amount? have yet to be received by the treasurer Among later contributions are £5( from the Taranaki and Egmont-Wanga-nui Hunt Clubs and £34 10s from th New Plymouth reformatory as a resul: of recent variety performances by thf inmates.

Donations will be received at the offices of the Taranaki Daily News and by either of the joint secretaries of the New Plymouth committee, Messrs. F. Davis and E. J. Carr, Devon Street, New Plymouth. At Waitara £312 ls 2d is in hand, but contributions from the Waitara district are expected to be much greater than this total. About £100, it is stated, has been collected at Urenui and district and further substantial sums are to eome from the Tikorangi and Brixton districts. Besides the Association football matches played in Pukekura Park on Saturday dances were held in the evening in country districts, the profits being for the Spitfire fund. At New Plymouth last night the Singing Pierrots gave a concert in aid of the Spitfire fund at the State Theatre, when an attractive and novel programme was presented. An amount of £2 2s credited to J. F. Munro omitted the address, Lepperton. An addition to the provincial total is £37 paid in at Patea. Of this sum a dance held by the Patea Municipal Band raised £14. A variation in regulations to enable trustees and companies to contribute to funds to provide aeroplanes for the Royal Air Force, for the defence of New Zealand or for training pilots in Canada under the Empire training scheme, where articles of association have hitherto prevented them from doing so, are contained in a Gazette notice, states a Wellington Press Association message.
