Champion Beet Crop Grown in 20in. Rows
Mr. F. W. Ward, who grew the winning crop of sugar beet in a cultivation competition organised by two Midland (England) beet factories, describes his methods as follows: — The crop was grown on a field of sandy loam containing 40 acres of beet after barley. The barley stubbles were scarified and 12 loads of dung per acre were ploughed in in September to a depth of 3in. The field was again ploughed 10m. deep on January 10, and lOcwt of ground burnt lhne were well worked in in March. The beet was sown on the flat from April 11 to April 20 and the following home-made mixture of artificial manures was' applied prior to sowing (per acre): 31cwt sulphate of ammonia. 3f cwt superphosphate (35 per cent.), 4cwt potash salts (30 per cent.). The avcrage width of the row was 20pn. and the width between the plants lOin. The official stand was 97 1 per cent.
