Parasite Infection Worries sty-fed Pigs
Flea infestion is a common source of trouble in pigs bedded in dry material. To get rid of this pest, all ola bedding should be bumed and the sties thoroughly cleansed and disinfected. It is also desirable that the woodwork of piggeries should be creosoted at regular intervals. Meanwhile the pigs should be turned out during the day into a yard or small field in which ruBbing posts should be placed. The posts should have sacking tied around them saturated with a mixture of paraffin oil and any mineral oil. or just the old oil from motor sumps. The pigs may be dressed all over with a similar preparation, but the paraffin oil should be used sparingly, say one part of paraffin oil with ten parts of mineral oil. Pigs may also be treated with a cream made by mixing flowers of sulphur with rape oil or crude cod-liver oil or fish oil. A good cheap spray for lice destruction may be made as follows: Melt 21b of soft soap in warm water, gently heat and add a quart of paraffin oil and simmer for a while, taking care that it does not catch on fire, but stirring well to make a mixture. Make up to 3 gallons with water for use as a spray.
