PATRIOTIC APPEAL
LONDON D1STRESS REIJI'-E taranaki campaign An appeal in Taranaki fnr cnnli'i butions to the Governnr-Gene.ral's fund of £1,000.000 for palriolif pnrposes is being launched. Of this snni £100,000 is to be used for the reliel of distress among air raid victims at London. This amount has already been forwarded. At- the request of Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, chairman of the Taranaki Provincial Patriotic Council. the Taranaki Daily News publishes the following apPG"Last week the Governor-General, Lord Galway, in a broadcast address launched an appeal for further funds i the National Patriotic Fund for the re. ef of the people of London, comforts for the Expeditionary Force and for the re habilitation of soldiers. To Help People of London.
"After referring to the magnificent response made by the people of New Zealand to previous appeals for funds, Hi Excellency went on to aay,-At tne moment we are greatly concerned about the plight of the many thousands vh have been rendered homeless by the d - liberate and dastardly air attacks by the enemy on the City of London and on other centres. Many of these people have lost all that they possessed in the world. To assist them the National Patriotic Fund Board recently remitted £100,000 to the Lord Mayor of London. The need for that money was immediate and urgent, and I have every ground for believing that the board's action in the matter met with the full approval of the people of the Dominion. There was no time to launch a special appeal for the money if the best possible use was to be made' of it. This evening I am appealing to the people of New Zealand not only to make good the £100.000 recently sent to London, but also to make a further contribution for the comfort and well-being of the Dominion's sons in the firing line It is to meet these urgent needs that I appeal to you this evening. As I have said, sacrifice in time of war is unavoidable. Those in the war zone have little option as to the nature of their sacrifice; they offer their lives that we may live in peace. Soon you will be asked by your Provincial Council to subscribe and I ask you Sll to be as generous as you possibly can. No donations can be too large. None will be too small. This is a heart-to-heart appeal. I do hope it will meet with 'a most favourable response.'
Taranaki's Quola £1125.
"At a meeting of the Taranaki Provincial Patriotic Council held at Stratford on Monday last, It was decided to appeal to the people of Taranaki to provide their quota of the £100,000 forwarded to London. Taranaki's quota is approximately £1125. "It is with the greatest confidence that we appeal to the people of Taranaki to provide this amount and we have not the slightest doubt that the response will be immediate and generous. "In the case of New Plymouth, contributions should be forwarded either to the Taranaki Daily News or the Taranaki Herald or to Mr. P. E. Stainton, hon secretary, Mr. F. T. Davis, treasurer, of the New Plymouth Borough and Taranaki County Patriotic Committee. "In all other centres in Taranaki contributions should be forwarded to the Mayor of the nearest town or to the honorary secretarj' of the local Patriotic Committee." The Taranaki Daily News will acknowledge amounts of £1 and over.
