TIGHTENING BELTS

British Official Wireless.

.» WARNING GIVEN BRITAIN

Rugby. Sept. 2 o. The Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, explaining propoged changes in i food rations to-day, warned listeners that "during the second year of war you must not expect to have all the things to choose from that you have had in the first year. "I am sure when you realise, he adqed, "that quite suddenly we lost all the supply of butter, eggs, bacon and condensed milk that used to ceme from other sources of supply — Holland and Denmark— you will agree that during this last year we have had everything we could expect." Talking of the second year of the war, Lord Woolton said: "You will have enough to eat, but I shall have to ask you to be prepared for temporary changes from time to time. If you cannot have one thing we will give you another. We must be 'flexible. For example, we are now having to bring butter from the southern hemisphere instead of Denmark. Supplies will begin to arrive about November and our stocks in this oountry are running down a bit, so I ask you to use a little more margarine until the new stocks of butter arrive, Our rneat stocks, on the other hand, are •really very good and, while continuing to be prudent, we can release a bit more so that for a time you will be able to have 2s 2d worth on each coupon. "There need by no doubts and no questionings that the food services of this oountry will see ua through, and I know that the women of this oountry will not be failing in care and consideration helping them to do it." Although the weekly eight-ounce fat ration is not affected, after September 30 only two ounces of it will be butter. In making this announcement the Ministry of Food explains that this is a precautionary measure to meet the normal seasonal reduction of output from Australia and New Zealand which is always at its lowest in September and October, but rises progressively from November onwarda. The seasonal increase of fresh meat enabled the ration to be temporarily increaspd from ls lOd worth of meat each week to 2s 2d.
