OAKURA DISTRICT NEWS

The Oakura Badminton Club held a presentation dance in the Oakura hall last week. Masters of ceremonies were Messrs. D. Kitchen and W. Toomey. Novelty dances were won by Miss Norma Berridge and Mr. G. Duke, Hurford Road, and Miss Green, Koru, and Mr. W. Toomey. The men's novelty prizes were given by Mr. C. Head. Mr. W. Toomey, in presenting the cups, congratulated Miss Marjorie Goodwin and Mr. Duncan Kitchin on winning the women's and men's singles championships. Euchre for non-dancers was played, Mrs. C. M. Price and Mr. A. Julian being the winners. There was a good attendance at a euchre party in the Oakura hall to raise funds for the Plunket Society. Prizewinners were Mrs. W. Toomey 1, Mrs. J. Press 2; Mr. R. Dagg, Okato, 1, Mr.L. Guy 2. Mrs. P. Heath, on behalf of the members of the Oakura Women's Division, thanked those present for attendance. Mrs. Andrews replied on behalf of the Okato branch of the Plunket Society. The Oakura tennis courts were opened last week-end. There was a good attendance. Mr. W. Toomey thanked Mr. F. Philpott, patron and secretary of the club. for the work he had donc and asked him to serve Ihe first ball. A club captain (W. Toomey) versus president (Mr. D. Harvey) match was played, the former winning by 8 sets 62 games to 6 sets 61 games. Results, the club captain's team being mentioned first, were:— Men's doubles: W. Toomey and B. Price beat D. Harvey and P. Hoby 6—3; F. Philpott and G. H. Bell beat C. Jans and L. Goodwin 6—5; D. Kitchin and R. Price beat R. Bell and R. Grey 6 — 2; R. Smith and R. Hoskin lost to J. Jans and J. Press 4—6. Women's singles: Miss N. Bell and Mrs. W. Toomey lost to Mrs. D. Harvey and Miss J. Marshall 1—6; Miss M. Nelson and Mrs. E. L. Hughes lost to Miss V. Price and Miss N. Hoby 2 — 6; Mrs. J. Jans and Miss M. Hart beat Miss C. Wcst and Mrs. Elmslie 6—4. Combincd doubles: Miss N. Bell and W. Toomey beat Miss J. Marshall and D. Harvey 6—5; Mrs. Toomey and C. Allen beat Miss M. Addenbrooke and partner 6—4; Mrs. J. Jans and F. Philpott beat Mrs. Harvey and C. Jans 6—2; Miss Nelson and R. Bell lost to Miss N. Hoby and J. Jans 2—6; Mrs. Hughes and B. Price lost to Miss J. Addenbrooke and R. Bell 2—6; Miss N. Bell and N. Addenbrooke beat Miss Eltis and L. Goodwin 6—0: Miss M. Hart and D. Kitchin lost to Mrs. Jans and J. Press 3—6.
