PATEA SURF CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING HELD
The past season had been quite successful and he hoped that members would strive to keep the club going until the troublesome times had passed. said Mr. G. S. Fraser, presiding at the annual meeting of the Patea Surf and Life-Saving Club on Tuesday. The training of the women's team had been successful and as there would probably be only the women's team to patrol the beach this season, he hoped they would carry on with their work. Officers elected were: Patron, Mr. E. F. Hemingway; president, Mr. G. Fraser; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. S. Martin, H. Boagey, H. J. Peaeocke, L. T. Adams. A. T. Tidswell, I. Harkness, F. W. Locker; hon aiiditor, Mr. E. F. Hemingway; hon. instructor. Mr. E. Oakley; hon. surgeon, Dr. W. T. Simmons; club captain, Mr. F. Verney; vice-captain, Miss J. Hunt; secretary atyl treasurer, Miss N. Anderson (pro tem); committee, Misses H. Hamerton, H. Willis, Mrs. T. Cardiff, Messrs. W. T. Lamb and L. Grieve; delegates to centre. Messrs. R. Howell and J. W. Moorhead; dclegates to Beach Improvement Society, Mrs. T. Cardiff and Mr. F. Verney. New members elected were Messrs. J. Stuart J. Bromilcy, W. Fields, Misses E. Burkctt, J. Hill, L. Lake, H. Davidson and A. Willis. It was decidcd that the club's dclegates make a request to the Beach Improvement Society that the baths be filled as early in October as po.ssible. The balance-shcet showed that the season had been completed with a crcdit. balance of £4 16s ld. This balance might seem small compared with the previous one of £31 6s 3d, but expenses were £50 4s lOd, whilst receipts amounled to only £23 14s 8d. The club was once again properly equipped, stated the annual report, having now a new rcel and new costumes, the cost of which amounted to £41 15s 6d. During the season difficulty was experienced in raising a men's team owing to the fact that most of the club's members were on active service. At a committee meeting in January a request from various women in the town that a women s surf team be formed was discussed and it was decided to go ahead with the training of the women and buy costumes for them. The club was represented at only two competitions, at Ohawe and the West Coast championships at Wanganui. At Ohawe the men's team was beaten by only one point by a New Plymouth team for the Ohawe shield. At Wanganui the women's team took part, putting up a good performance under conditions that were not of the best and gaining second place in their heat after being in training for only six weeks. The 'usual competitions were held at Patea, conditions being unfavourable. The only visiting team was Ohawe, other teams being unable to be present owing to petrol restrictions. Fifteen competitors, including three women, took part in the annual bridge to beach race for the president s cup, the winner being F. Verney. Thanks were accorded all who had assisted the club during the season, the domain board for use of the shed, Mr. Fraser and the borough council for the use of rooms for meetings, and to all members who had assisted the club.
