SUCCESS OF J. HOLDEN ELTHAM TOURNAMENT
J. Holden added the Central Taranaki title to the Taranaki charnpionship that he won at Easter when he accounted for the opposition at Eltham during the week-end. With J. Jeffery not competing Holden appears to possess a good chance of carrying off both the North Taranaki and New Plymouth club titles during next month. To win any golf title a player must have some luck in his favour and Holden had his share in the first round at Eltham when L. B. Gibson failed with a yard putt on the last green. Had Gibson sank this putt Holden was out but he missed and Holden went on to win at the 20th. From then on he played too well for his opponents. Holden, usually uses his niblick and mashie niblick a good deal but at Eltham he found that these shots often failed to hold ihe fast greens and he cleverlj' adapted himself to the conditions and used a run up shot very effectively. T. Gibson made a gallant attempt to retain his title. He eliminated a formidable opponent in the Hutt player, W. B. Reilly, in the semi-final after fighting a courageous uphill battle and he appeared to be suffering from the eflects of this struggle when playing Holden in the final. For nine holes Gibson put up a great fight and those who were familiar with his usual fighting finishes were confident when he was only one down at the turn but Gibson's game began to deteriorate and Holden making no errors soon placed the issue beyond doubt. Not Suited by Course. Though beaten in the semi-final, Reilly the Hutt plus two man was far from being disgraeed. The main strength of his play lies in the accuracy of his long irons and ths Eltham course gave him few opportunities of demonstrating this skill. J. Jeffery also on the plus two mark was not seen at his best in the early stages of his game with Holden but showed his worth in the afternoon when he reeled off a 67 to play two strokes below his plus two handicap. Many Past Title Holders. An interesting feature of the Eltham tournament was that all the previous title holders with the exception of A. E. Conway competed and all qualified. They were W. B. Reilly, the first winner, H. P. Wills, L. B. Gibson, S. McKay, R. Wills and T. Gibson. H. P. Wills has won the title twice but 50 far is the only one to accomplish this feat. Seafield Cup Contest. Displaying their usual sportsmanship the Eltham club is taking the Seafield Cup to Hawera during the week-end to give the Hawera Club an opportunity to win the trophy on their own links. The contest will take place between teams of 10 aside. This is believed to be the largest number that have ever taken part in a game for this trophy. The game is creating considerabie interest and an interesting contest should result. Westown Qualifying.
