WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Normanby: Mrs. A. G. Knuckey presided at the monthly meeting. Mrs. A. Carey, president of the South Taranaki Federation, was a guest of honour. She gave a talk on the activities of the Dominion council, which met at Wellington recently. Mrs. Knuckey was nominated for the Dominion council and Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Stevenson were elected to represent the institute at the provincial council meeting at Hawera. Mrs. Knuckey reported that 43 articles had been sent to the Red Cross and Lady Galway Guild and eight parcels had been packed and sent to local troops overseas. A points competition for a best bloom grown in a member's garden was won by Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Knuckey second and Mrs. Grant third. A competition for a cake to be sent overseas was won by Mrs. Leydon 1, with Mrs. Knuckey 2 and Mrs. Breach 3. The travelling prize was won by Mrs. Augustine. Hostesses were Mesdames Lynskey, Coutts and Meuli. Mrs. Knuckey was arked to accept- a gift as a token of esteem from the members. Waitara: Mrs. Neil presided at the seventh birthday. A telegram from Mrs. Jury, a past president, wishing the institute every success was received. Items included: Songs, Miss J. Garner and Glee Club duet, Mrs. Grech and J. Garner; dance, Miss Nerida Howlett; piano solo, Mrs. ,R. St. George; competitions resulted: Elephant torn from paper, Mrs. Walker; travelling shilling, Mrs. Payne; best bloom, Mrs. Chadwick; birthday present for the institute (judged by Mrs. Johnson and Pennington), Mrs. Sisley 1, Mrs. Dowding 2, Mrs. Ford 3; musical parcel, Mrs. Payne; dressed duck, Mrs. Hughson. Mrs. Trim, the first institute president, blew out the candles on a cake. Mrs. Neil thanked her committee for the way in which it worked to make the afternoon a success, and Mrs. Chadwick for the decorated tables and Mr. Howlett for making the cake. Mrs. Hamlin spoke on behalf of the next to kin present thanking the institute for the invitaion to the birthday.
