ILLEGAL SALE CASE

LIQUOR.KEPT IN STORE
Taupo, Sept. 23. One month's imprisonment, later reduced to three weeks on the plea of counsel, was imposed on Hannah Josenh Habib, a storekeeper, of Oruanui, in the Taupo Police Court, on a charge of selling liquor without a license. Habib, who was represented by Mr. E. Roe, pleaded guilty. Evidence of a police raid on Habib's premises was given by Inspector Carroll, who said that 16 bottles of whisky. eight cases of whisky, 505 bottles of ale and stout, one case of rum, and many bottles of brandy and port had been founcL Mr. Roe stated accused had bought the liquor when a shortage in the Dominion was threatened. He had intended to sell it again later. In imposing sentence the magistrate, Mr. J. Miller, said he did not think the maximum fine would be sufficient, as Habib had been brought up on similar charges previously. As none of those, however, had been within the last five years, Habib must be treated as a first offender. The magistrate reduced the term when counsel stated that one month's imprisonment would impose hardship" on "Habib's wife and family.
