POWERFUL TUG SUNK
SYDNEY HARBOUR MISHAP Rec. 11.20 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 23. One of the best known and most powerful tugs in Sydney harbour, Hero, was sunk this afternoon when she was struck by a big freighter which she was assisting to berth. One member of the crew of five, John Downie, was drowned. The remainder, including Captain S. Weldon, was rescued by water police launches. The collision occurred close to the harbour bridge while the Hero and an other tug were moving into position to take the towlines. The Hero was struck amidships, turned completely over and sank in a few minutes, stern first. The Hero was owned by J. Fenwick Proprietary Limited.
