MOTORISTS' PLANE?
GIFT TO ROYAL AIR FORCE SOUTH TARANAKI FAVOUR Support for the proposal that the motorists of New Zealand should give a fighter aeroplane to the Royal Air Force was expressed at a meeting of the Automobile Association (South Taranaki) at Hawera last night. A letter was received from the North Island Motor Union soliciting the support of the association for the scheme. "II has been definitely stated that any surplus after the £100,000 has been raised will be devoted to the ordinary war fund," said Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P. "We don't want to get pushed into the surplus, and I suggest we find out from the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, whether the sterling will be available. Would Not Contribute. Two associations had already intimated that they did not intend to contribute to the fund. said the chairman, Mr. P. de Launay. "I don't think we should turn this proposal down provided the other associations come in," said Mr. W. A. O Callaghan. "Auckland might. reconsider its decision when it knows how many associations favour it," said Mr. S. C. Tonks. A motion approving of the scheme and undertaking to contribute to the fund on a pro rata basis was moved by Mr. O'Cgllaghan. "It would cost about £200 on the basis of what we contributed to the ambulance fund." said Mr. R. H. Leece. "We could not go on with it without the Auckland and Hawkes Bay associations," commented Mr. W. O. Williams. The motion was carried.
