LOTTERY OPPOSED
PATRIOTIC FUND PLAN APPROVAL OF RAFFLES "The big lotteries in Australia give the gambler some incentive to speculate and I think that most people in New Zealand would support a big swcepstake," said Mr. F. L. Frost, M.P., at a meeting of the Taranaki Provinhial Patriotic Council yesterday, in suggesting that the scores of minor patriotic raffles should be replaced by a national lottery and t'nereby do the job "in a good way." The proposal that this suggestion should be brought before the National Patriotic Council was defeated when put to the vote. If substantial prizes were offered he was fairly certain the support of the public would be freely given, said Mr. Frost. He thought that the large sum to be raised by provincial councils could be largely gained by a national lottery. In seconding the motion pro forma, Mr. N. H. Moss remarked that the motion spoke for itself. "1*11 have a ticket," jested the chairman, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, while the Mayor of Stratford, Mr. P. Thomson, commented that He would oppose it "tooth and nail." Put to the vote, the motion was thought to be a close issue on the voices. A division showed that 12 delegates were against and seven for. Several delegates did not vote af all. Later in the meeting the New Plymouth Pierrots' application for the council's permit to raffle a motor-car, a building lot and a suite of furniture was brought before the meeting, whereupon Mr. Moss suggested that if those who were against the lottery proposal were consistent they would vote against granting the permit. The council approved of the permit and Mr. Frost said. "They like a little fluttbr."
