GIVEN PROBATION

By Telegraph—Press Association.

WOMAN IN ASSAULT CASE

Auckland, Sept. 23. "This case supports the old saying that hell hath no fury like the woman scorned," said Mr. Terrv in the Police Court, when appearing for Violet Amy Benjamin, dressmaker, aged 35, who admitted charges of assaulting another woman and breaking a leadlight in her flat on September 10. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said accused went to complainant's flat and struck her with a milk bottle and a broom handle, inflicting several euts. Counsel said accused had no contemplation of hurting the other woman, but intended to have a showdown with her about their relative positions in regard to a third party. There was no likelihood of the incident being repeated. Referring to a charge against accused in April, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.,«said it gave a clue to her nature. The assault might have resulted in very serious consequences. It was only a question of degree and there might have been a death. As far as the Court was concerned, the second woman was an innocent party. Accused was admitted to probation for 18 months and ordered to pay expenses, £4/12/'-, incurred by complainant for cleaning her ciothes and medical treatment, and £1/10/- to repair the. broken window.
