NORMANBY SCHOOL

SITE FOR SCHOOL BATHS The monthly meeting of the Normanby school committee was held on Tuesday, Mr. P. Whitlock being chairman. The headmaster reported on the position of the school as regarding grading and staffing for 1941. He pointed out that the school was just on the borderline and would with difficulty maintain its present grade. The number of children on the roll at th end of the first week was only 114 but had risen to 122 last week. To have an average roll of 121 two more children were needed. There were several children of school age who had not yet attended school. Correspondence was read from the Health Department stating that it would not be permissible to construct the school learners' swimming pool ^ on the section adjoining the town board s water bore. It was decided to enter into negotiations with the owner of another section. Mr. S. Breach forwarded his resignation from the committee on account of his activities with the St. John Ambulance Society occupying all his spare time. The resignation was accepted with regret and it was agrced that Mr. Breach be commended for his wartime work. A letter from the town board stated that it was prepared to fill the proposed school bath when it was completed. The headmaster reported that the children had held a further Arbor Day celebration at Brett's corner, where kowhais and several kapikateas, miros, titokes and totaras grown in the school nurseries had been planted out. An appreciative letter on the matter was read from the Hawera County Council complimenting the headmaster and the children. The headmaster stated that the children would plant about 500 kowhais at Turuturu Mokai. The chairman reported that the balance of the assets of the Normanby Horticultural Society had been given to the school committee. to build a learners' swimming pool. That amount, added to the money already collected by the committee, meant that a sufficient sum of money" was on hand to build the bath pro'vided the department's £1 for £1 subsidy was available. It was decided to hold a spvecial meeting as soon as replies were received from the board and the Health Department on the question of a new site.
