OPUNAKE FIRST AID WORK
At the first annual inspection parade of the Opunake division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, the inspecting officers were District Superintendent R. A. Wall and District Secretary J. M. Jemieon. Superintendent Wall, who later gave instruction in new formation and stretcher drill, expressed satisfaction with the general standard of work in elementary and hand-seat drill and in stretcher work, combiried with the rendering of first-aia. He also commented favourably on the condition of the stores and the manner in which the records had been kept. Drill, as a means of producing discip'line and precision of movement on all occasions, was of the first importance, said Superintendent Wall. Moreover, those members who undertook military service with the New Zealand Medical Corps and who could show by their bearing that they had received thorough and efficient training would make rapid progress towards promotion. Those successful in the first-aid examination which followed the termination of the 1940 series of lectures by Dr. T. N. Watt, divisional surgeon, were Mesdames J. Smith, R. B. Bowman, A. Denham, Misses M. and L. Fawcett, T. Mathie, M. Lynch, Q. Sinclair, Messrs. R. W. Heenan, R. Kidd, W. S. Amon, B. Mills, J. Olliver, C. H. Humphries, A. Hinch and W. Holland. Four certificated members were reexamined by Dr. Watt and also gained their 1940 certificate, those successful being Messrs. R. B. Croke (divisional superintendent), L. Brennan (divisional secretary), P. Redin and H. Smith. The promotion of Private P. Redin to be sergeant and Private A. Hinch to be corporal of the Opunake division has been recommended to headquarters.
