NEW PLYMOUTH
Miss Ethel Law, national general secretary of the Y.W.C.A. for New Zealand, will return to-day to Wellington after spending a few days at New Plymouth as the guest of Mrs. A. Alexander. Mrs. B. E. Stott returned on Thursday from a holiday at North Egmont. Mrs. E. D. Patchett is spending a holiday at Hamilton. Mrs.Ian Keith has returned to New Plymouth from a holiday at Motueka, where she visited her mother, Mrs. Stringer. Miss Mona Dyer is spending a holiday at Wellington. Miss K. Sims, of the nursing staff of the New Psymouth hospital, is visiting Waverley. Mrs. Keith Wells has returned to Meremere after spending a holiday at New Plymouth with her mother, Mrs. A. H. Fever. Miss N. Johnson is a Hawera visitor to New Plymouth. Miss Tui Turnbull, Gore, is the guest of Mrs. J. G. Turnbull, Dorset Avenue, New Plymouth. Women's Auxiliary Meeting. The monthly meeting of the women's auxiliary was held at the Alexander Hall on Wednesday afternoon, when tiere was a good attendj|pce. Mrs. A. Alexander was in the chair, and the hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames E. Smith and Cassie and Miss Mitchelhill. Mrs. F. Carter, president of the women's auxiliary, introduced Miss Ethel Law, Wellington, national general secretary of the Y.W.C.A. for New Zealand, who gave an interesting talk on the wa r work' of the Y.W.C.A. at home and abroad. On behalf of the members Mrs. Hubbell thanked the speaker and the hostesses and then afternoon tea was served. Ladies' Evcning. Masses of spring flowers gave an appropriate air of festivity to the rooms of the Taranaki Club last night when the ladies' annual evening was held. In the entrance hall the guests were greeted by a colourful profusion of Iceland poppies and gerberas arranged with bronze prunus foliage, and in the spacious lounge, where dancing took place, were bowls of pink-tinted lilies, poppies and ranunculi. In the reading-room, which made a comfortable sitting-out room, a colour scheme of pink and mauve was effectively carried out with vases o{ fragrant stock, primulas, peach blossom and pink azaleas. The billiard room was gay with mixed bowls of orangeshaded flowers. The guests were welcomed by the president of the club, Mr. F. S. Johns, and Mrs. Johns, assisted by the vicenresident. Mr. P. E. Stainton, and Mrs.
Stainton. Mrs. Johns wore a gown of jade green self-patterned cloaque relieved with gold lace and trimmed at the neckline with a jade ornament. Her shoulder spray was of gold-shaded flowers. Mrs. Stainton's gown of dull rose lace was worn with a matching short coat and a shoulder spray of pink flowers. The committee assisting Mrs. Johns with decorations comprised Mesdames S. F. Burgess, P. F. Atkinson, P. L. Phillipps, R. Millward, J. Davies, C. H. Wynyard, H. W. Brown, A. J. Papps and A. D. Taylor. Bring-and-Buy Afternoon. The women's committee of the Star Rugby Football Club held a successful "bring-and-buy" afternoon on Wednes- . day at the home of Mrs. G. H. Thomson, Devon Street west. As a result of the afternoon the club funds were augmented by the sum of £5 15s 8d, and a further £1 was given to the soldiers' comforts fund. Two competitions arranged by Mrs. H. N. Wolfe were won by Mesdames Bullot and Clark and by Mrs. Little. A duchess set donated by Mrs. R. Jury was won by Mrs. Callaghan, and Mrs. Bullot won a competition for a tea cup, saucer and plate. Afternoon tea was served by the women's committee.
