"The only way to get a meeting in the country is to advertise a cuchre party and hold a meeting when the people come along," Cr. Hutchen added. Anti-Frost Precaution. On the No. 1 Opunake highway a short length of road east of the Hastings Road intersection was widened to lessen the danger from frost, reported Mr. S. R. Mann, engineer, to a meeting of the Stratford County Council yesterday. Portion of the 600 cubic yards removed was used for banking, and the balance would be used on another portion of the road. Grateful Committee. "On behalf of the Bird Road school committee I wish to convey to the county council and staff our thanks for the spreading of metal on the roadside, which we appreciate very much indeed," wrote the chairman of the Bird Road school committee, Mr. J. R. Pattinson, to a meeting of the Stratford County Council yesterday. Pets Exchanged. A variety of budgerigars and pet lambs were disposed of at the weekly auction sale at Stratford yesterday. A lone budgerigar sold for 4s, pairs realised from 5s to 6s, while two pairs sold together brought 8s. Pet lambs in good fettle realised from 8s 6d to 10s. Plunket Shop Day. Between £70 and £80 was realised by the Stratford Plunket Society yesterday, when a shop day was held in vacant premises in Broadway. An excellent assortment of goods was offered and met with a ready sale. The goods, comprising handcraft articles, vegetables, cooking. preserves and cakes, were given by members. supporters and well-wishers. Besides the shop activities members of the society conducted competitions on the street opposite the shop. Competitions were won as follows: Gollywog, Mrs. Wallace, Tututawa; tea cosy, Mrs. A. N. Mills, Matau. A copper trail received good support.
