AT THE MAYFAIR TO-DAY.
"DAD RUDD, M.P." Another step, and a very big one, is taken up Australia's ladder to movie eminence with "Dad Rudd, M.P.," the new Cinesound comedy opening a season to-day at 2 and 8 p.m. at the Mayfair Theatre. The rustic humour of Dad and the entertaining behaviour of Dave must by now be an Australian institution.
Steele Rudd's classic is brought to the screen with all its inimitable Australian wit, and if Bert Bailey, in the title role, had never made a film in his life before Jie would be accepted as one of the front-rankers. Excitement in the Rudd family starts with the acquisition of a horse-drawn fire engine that Dave and the boys put through a rapid coyrse of depreciation and finish with Dad's elec- | tion to Parliament and his fighting speech to have the local dam extended. Fred MacDonald, as Dave, is just the realisation of thousands of listeners' expectations; Connie Martyn, who plays the parl of Mum, also fits into the wholesome jig-saw, and the rest of the players are splendidly cast. The supporting programme includes "These Children Are Safe," showing the evacuation and care of London's children, Pathetone Weekly, a scenic of Lancashire. "Can You Ski?" in technicolour, "Country Fair"_ interest and Cinesound News. Booking is essential.
