"1 WAS A CONVICT." Action, romance and drama in liberal quantities await audiences in "I Was a Convict." the Republic drama with Barton MacLanc and Beverly Roberts, which will be shown finally to-night at the Grand Theatre, Hawera. The story deals with the experiences of one J. B. Harrison, millionaire food magnate, who is sentenced to prison for income tax evasion. While there he is the cell mate of Ace King, big-time racketeer. The two form a strange friendship, and on his release Harrison arranges a parole for Ace and, his pal, Missouri. Harrison slartles the business world, as well a.s his mercenary family, by installing Ace and Missouri in important posit.ions witli his company. Only one person agrees with his idea of giving the ex-convicts a chance — slie is his daughter, Judy. MacLane gives one of the best performanccs of his carcer in the role of "Ace." Clarence Kolb is excellcnt as Harrison, and Beverly Roberts portrays her role with charm and conviction. Others in the splendid cast worth.v of mention are Horace MacMnhon. Ben Wilden and John Harmon. The second feature of Ihe two-star prosrramme is th ; thrilling Western drama "Border Brigands."
