Y.W.-Y.M.C.A. WORK

ANNUAL MEETING HELD Nearly 100 citizens of New Plymouth assembled last night for the 19th annual meeting of the New. Plymouth branch of the Y.W.-Y.M.C.A.. The Mayor, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, presided. The Rev. E. D. Patchett conducted devotions. The fact that the two associations, the Y.M. and the Y.W., had operated during the year on only £878 was stressed by Mr. T. B. Herdson. He spoke after the. treasurer, Mrs. T. F. Warren had explained some of the difficulties of running the various activities of the movement during a year of rising costs. The balance sheet disclosed an excess of income over expenditure in connection with the community house of £135 9s 8d, largely due to the raising of £443 by special efforts including a successful street day. . The experience in the operation of the hostel was not so fortunate, for there a loss of £141 was made. Nevertheless, the chairman remarked, the position was infinitely better than that disclosed last year. The report and balance sheet were adopted without discussion. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President of the Young Women's Association, Mrs. P. C. Davie; president of the Young Men's Association, Dr. G. Walker; board of directors, Mesdames P. C. Davie, F. Therkleson (on leave), W. Shrimpton, L. Chivers, T. F. Warren, F. Muirhead (on leave), A. E. Horsfall. T. Horton, S. R. Morley (for three years), W- R- Burgess, B. Johnstone, H. P. Gray, N. Cameron; Misses D. Bethell, K. Dunning and O. Nicol (for one year; men's management committee, Messrs. T. B. Herdson, F. S. Grayling, A. Sandford, F. R. Fairey, M. J. Neville, L. R. Cooper, A. Weir, G. I Smith and W. Martin. A talk was given by Miss Ethel Law, National general secretary, who traced the growth of the movement and recalled the lives of a number of familiar figures associated with the first days. She concluded by drawing attention to the hall in which the meeting was being held. This, she said, was known as the Alexander Hall and it stood a memorial for years to come to the retiring president, Mrs. A. Alexander. A play reading of a humorous character was subsequently given by senior and junior girls
