MEETING OF COUNCIL A letter from the school committee thanking the Eltham Borough Council for construction of the parking area at the infant schopl' was received at the council 'meeting this week. The Mayor, Mr, R. Lewis, commented Ihat it was a pleasant change to receive thanks. The reserves committee reported that ! the hedge at Railway Street had been cut to three feet six inches and arrangements were being completed with the Railway Department either to cut the existing fence to the same height or entirely remove it. Removal of a telephone post on the north end of the railway reserve was being arranged with the Post and Telegraph Department. The works committee reported that the question of the diversion of storm water into the sewers was being investigated. On the recommendation of the finance committee it was resolved to forward a letter of appreciation to the Automobile Association for the services rendered by its officers. Removing turf and grading the area with pit metal was done in front of the infant school, the Presbyterian Church and a portion of Mountain Road north. Kerbing and channelling round the reserve between Moir Street west and Railway Street was done. Extending the asphalt to the new work would be done when conditions were favourable. Four new services were laid ftod fittings pipes put in to supply, three gas rings, one cooker and one water heater, stated the gas department report. The • somewhat unsatisfactory state of certain food-sellers premises was being investigated, and he proposed to report fully concerning them at a later date, stated the health inspector. Five notices were issued to people for repairs to gutter spouting and the cutting of hedges, reported the inspector.
