SPRING FLOWERS

WHANGAMOMONA DISPLAY The mild winter experienced in the Whangamomona district. followed by several weeks of good growing weather, helped to make an outstanding success of this year's Whangamomona flower show. Organised by the Whangamomona branch of the W.D.F.U., the sj}°w drew over 200 entries from a wide field of competitors. Many new varieties of bulbs showed an increased interest on the part of amateur growers. The champion bloom was a magnificent specimen of "Kantara, ' _a pure-white, large trumpet, with a perianth over four inches in diameter. exhibited by Miss E. Robinson, Kohuratahi. The show was officially opened by Mrs. H. Hunt, Central Taranaki provincial president of the W.D.F.U. Mr. G. Murphy introduced the speaker, who congratulated all those eoncerned m the organisation of the afternoon's display. Items were given by pupils of Whangamomona and Marco Road schools. Afternoon tea was served by a committee comprising Mesdames Henry. Nicol, Murphy, Tichener and Miss Smith. Winners of competitions were: Nail-driving, Miss Smith; doll (donated by Mrs. M. Hoole, proceeds for patriotic fund), Dara McCutchan. Tahora: box of sweets, Miss M. Willis. Kohuratahi. Stalls did a bnsk trade, helpers being: Produce. Mrs. Lewes and Mrs. Brookes: sweets, Mrs. Bridgemari, Misses M. Okey and A. Perry: "white elephant" stall, Mrs. Haggerty and Mrs. Carter. . A baby show attracted so many entries that it had to be divided into three sections. The winners were: Under 7 months, Baby Otta; 7-12 months Murray Keen; 12-18 months, Lynette Mitchell. The judging was done by Sister R. Fyson, district nurse, and Sister Gaddis, Stratford. The stewards were: Mesdames G. Murphy and S. Anderson. Mrs. Fletcher was in charge of the nail-driving contest. The joint secretaries were Mrs. K. High and Miss L. Junker. Detailed awards were as follows: — Spring Bulbs. Judges: Mesdames R. Okey, A. Perry and J. A. Carver.
