(By "Limited.")

Track conditions at Hawera racecoursa on Tuesday were very heavy- after recent rains, and times were' consequently slow. The«fast work was performed on the extreme outside of the course. After the interval R. Brough sent Air Flight (McDonald) and Chief Lord (Ryan) three furlongs from the seven furlongs post. Dashing away smartly to register 27s for the first two furlongs, they finished with little between" them in 41s. Friesland (Holland) worked with plenty of dash in his pace work on the sandy as did his stablemate Tavoy. The two-year-olds Retort (McDonald) and High Tone (Holland) sprinted a couple of furlongs down the back in 26s, ftnishing together. The Marton candidates Winsome Lu (Reilly) and Silver Gift (Whiro) were associated, Winsome Lu going from the seven furlongs and being perfectly picked up at the five furlongs by, Silver Gift. Running her first two furlongs in 28s and the half-mile in 57s, Winsome Lu covered the seven in lm 40s, the last three furlongs in 43s and finishing very well to beat her companion by a head. Silver Gift's five furlongs occupied lm 12s. Le Marquise (Ryan) continues to please in his track work and did solid three-quarter pace work. Notium (Mills) shaped well in a working -gallop over six furlongs. Martene (McDonald) was allotted useful pace exercise. Chiltern (McDonald) and Gold. Grip (Graham) sprinted three furlongs down the back in 42 3-5s, Chiltern appearing to advantage in the heavy"*going. Val Pere, Val Bay and Miss Phaleron are all making steady progress. . Among the two-year-olds beginning to attract attention is the well grown Pink Coat— Pacify filly Pink Lass, of a Hunting Song type, who is making good progress. Battledress -and Ring Chief were given routine pace work. The latest addition to Hawera horses under Leo George's care is a two-year-old gelding by Plato from Lucky Lass, and half-sister to Pretty Lass and Gitana Lass. So far this season Hawera two-year-olds have not measured up well. in competition, High Tone and Retort failing at Palmerston North, and Gernock failing to run prominently at Avondale on two occasions. However, it is early • in the season and there is ample time for the youngsters to develop and improve as the season advances.
