TURF ITEMS IN BRIEF

Polario, who is nominated for the juvenile event at Marton this week, is a half-brother by Phaleron Bay to the Rulanut filly Stencil. One of the fastest sprinters to race in the Dominion in recent years was the Gascony— Valley Rose gelding Ben Braggie, who was sold to go to India, and it is interesting to note that a two-year-old full-sister to Ben Braggie will race this season under the name of Valcony. Wagner's breakdown during a gallop at Riccarton has proved to be serious, and it is doubtful if he will race again. Wagner has never been a very sound horse, bul has been a useful performer for Mr. t>. O. Rutherford. Gayest Son, who had very little racing last year, is making good progress at Hastings, and he should soon be in racing condition. Royal Minstrel, who has not raced since Easter, is also in good order to begin a serious preparation.
