WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Pembroke Road: Mrs. Hunt presided at the September meeting. A welcome was extended to Mrs. Kemsley and Mrs. Wrigley, a new member. Misses Betty and Jean Wicksteed were visitors. A donation of £2 was granted to the Spitfire fund and £1 to the leper fund. A sewing day was held during the month, when the local women joined with members of the division in renovating garments for the Lady GaUvay guild. Eighty-six finished garmenls and a peggy square quilt have been sent. A competition for the best article from half a yard of material was won by Mrs. Bayly. with Mrs. Tomlyn second. Hostesses were Mesdames Tomlyn and McCracken. Whareroa: Mrs. Paterson presided over a good attendance. A travel talk was given by Mrs. Staton. Results of monthly competitions were: Vase of flowers, Mrs. Hicks 1, Mrs. Aberley 2. Mrs. Paterson 3; best bloom, Mrs. Mills 1, . Mrs. Hicks 2, Mrs. Tozer 3. Good business was done at the saies table. Hostesses were Mesdames Aberley and Tozer. Carlyle: Mrs. H. J. Peacocke presided at this month's meeting, which was held at Mrs. R. Mercer's residence, and welcomed Mrs. J. Jackson, a new member. A Scottish joke guessing competition was won by Mrs. Mercer and Mrs. R. Fairweather. Competition for the best butter sponge resulted: Mrs. R. Burgess 1, Mrs. H. Moore 2, Mrs. Butters 3.
