PAYMENT COMPARED

BRITISH— DOMINION MEN A comparison of army pay in New Zealand and Great Britain shows that, while men and non-commissioned officers in the Dominion are on a substantially higher rate than their opposite numbers in the British Army, officers' allowances are on a lower basis. Details of British army pay are taken from the official publication, "Army Royal Warrant," but the rates quoted do • not, however, include the 6d per day increase granted recently to offset higher costs in England. Before this increase was granted the British trooper, gunner, driver, signalman, private and similar ranks received 2s 9d per day, compared with the 7s for New Zealanders in camp and 7s 6d after embarkation. The pay of British warrant officers and non-commissioned officers is as follows: •Regimental sergeant-major, 14s; staff sergeant-major, 13s; regimental quarter-master-sergeant, 12s; company sergeantmajor, 10s; colour-sergeant, 9s 6d; sergeant, 7s to 7s 6d; lance-sergeant, 5s 6d; corporal or bombardier, 5s; lanceeorporal or lance-bombardier, 4s 3d. Corresponding rates in the New Zealand army are as follows, those in parentheses being the amounts paid from the date of embarkation: Warrant-officer I, 11s (13s 6d); warrant officer II, 10s (12s 6d); company quartermaster-sergeant, 9s (11s 6d); staff -sergeant, 9s (11s 6d); sergeant, 8s 6d (10s); bombardier and corporalj 8s (9s); lance-bombardier .and lance-corporal, 7s 6d (8s).
