RAILWAY FAREWELL

HAWERA OFFICER LEAVES A complimentary smoke concert was tendered by all sections of the railway service to Mr. W. A. Turnbull, Hawera, on Saturday night. Mr. Turnbull, who has been at Hawera for 18 years as railway electrician of the area between Stratford and Maxwell, has been promoted to an advanced position, and will be stationed at New Plymouth until he retires on superannuation in about 12 months. Mr. J. S. McCallum, president of the Hawera branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, of which. Mr. Turnbull was secretary for 12 years, presided. Speakers referred ' to Mr. Turnbull's association and active participation in every phase of the sports and social life of the railway community, and particularly as a cricketer, a bowler and a member of the railway picnic committee. Making a presentation, the stationmaster, Mr. H. M. Smith, spoke of Mr. Turnbull's efficiency as an officer and his efforts at all times to promote the best interests of the service. Toasts were: "A.S.R.E." (Mr. T. J. Kennedy — Mr. S. Kelly); "Sister Societies" (Mr. J. Emerson — Messrs. C. B. Crisp on behalf of the Railway Officers' Institute and L. F. Toy on behalf of the I Engine-drivers, Firemen and Cleaners' Association); "Armed Forces Overseas" (Mr. A. Bankhart— Mr. Crisp); "The Visitors" (Mr. C. Thomson— Mr. Rogers); and "The Artists" (Mr. S. Reece — Mr. L. G. Rink). Entertainment was provided by Messrs. Rogers (piano and conjuring), Rink (accordion) and Emerson (songs).
