NEW POST OFFICE
CONSTRUCTION SET BACK WAR ECONOMY MEASURE Owing to the war economy measure of making as few calls as possible on sterling funds, the erection of the proposed new chief post office at New Plymouth at a cost of £105,000 had had to be postponed by Cabinet, the Postmaster-General, the Hon. P. C. Webb, informed a deputation from the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. The Minister added that tenders for the levelling and grading of the new building site in Currie Street were under consideration and if the work was proceeded with the site would be made available as a public parking space for motor vehicles. In any case the work was necessary before building operations could be commenced. Renovating Old Building. Referring to the existing chief post office building the Ministed stated that renovations would shortly be undertaken ln order to keep the building in a presentable condition. I The Minister mentioned that the erec- | tion of the proposed automatic exchange , building at an estimated cost of £14,000 had been deferred. It was, however, proposed to make an addition to the department's workshops in Gill Street. Plans were being prepared and the estimated cost of the work was £2700.
