STRATFORD

Mrs. James Lennox, Wellington, is spending a holiday with Mrs. J. J. Bourke, Opunake Road. Mrs. O. Clarke, Misses E. Wilmshurst, S. Nowell and J. Hale were visitors to Eltham at the week-end for the golf tournament. Mrs. B. P. Bellringer has returned from a visit to New Plymouth. Miss Dorothy Keightly has left to spend a month's holiday at Opunake before leaving for Palmerston North, where she has accepted a position. Miss Merle Rowell has returned home after spending the week-end as the guest of Miss Bessie Cole, Tikorangi. Miss J. E. M. Burns, Hawera, was the guest of her sister, Mrs. W. Brooks, Regan Street, for the week-end. Bird Road Patriotic Effort. Bowls of spring flowers made a bright setting in Mrs. R. S. Death's sittingroom when she and Mrs. H. Martin entertained friends at a social afternoon in aid of patriotic funds. The sum of £4 5s lOd was realised. Competitions were won by Mesdames R. Patterson, H. Horn and Woods and Miss Freda Nolly. Miss Nolly also won a competition for bed socks. Next-of-kin Club Meets. Wives of returned soldiers entertained about 90 women relatives of soldiers overseas at the parish hall last Friday. Vases of spring bulbs decorated the hall. Miss Joyce Dick danced and her sister, Miss Jessie Dick, played an accompanixnent. The Rev. M. Scott gave a talk on his travels on the Continent. Mrs. Gibbs presented a silver spoon to baby Judith Florence Gordon, whose father is overseas. Patriotic Afternoon. The sum of £4 5s lOd was realised for patriotic purposes by an afternoon held at the home of Mrs. R. S. Death, Bird Road, with Mrs. H. Martin and Mrs. Death as joint hostesses. Spring flowers were the basis of the decorative motif. General competitions were won by Mesdames R. Pattinson. H. Horn and Woods and Miss Freda Nolly. A competition for bed socks was won by Miss Nolly.
