SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERT

The Taranaki Musicians' Union orchestra of 20 instrumentalists, assisted by a party of Maori entertainers and several well-known musicians presented a concert programme at the New Plymouth Opera House on Sunday night. In spite of the unfavourable weather there was a large audience and all the items were enthusiastically received. Mr. L. W. Louisson, president of the New Plymouth Territorial Association, by whom the concert was sponsored explained the object for which the concert was arranged and the purposes for which the proceeds were required. The takings at the door amounted to well over £20, but the complete result will not be available until all returns from the sale of tickets are made. The orchestra was under the direction of Mr. Claude Smith, and a varied selection of works was played, including wartime marches, popular melodies and topical song tunes. The Maori party contributed native songs and poi dances and solo items were given by Messrs. Bert Venner, Harold Lee (saxophone), Stuart Gordon, Jock Rustling (yodelling), Mrs. Flora Allen (violin), the Harmony Duo, singers and piano-accordion players. Mr. A. Ramsay was the aecompanist.
