MUSIC ON MT. EGMONT
BANDSMEN'S "HIGH" NOTES Three members of the Stratford Citizens' Band may have set a new musical high altitude record for New Zealand, when on Sunday afternoon they serenaded the Policeman, 6000 feet up on the slopes of Mt. Egmont, with double bass and comets, This was the highlight of a performance given by the band at Manganui Hut, which is about 5000 feet up the mountainside. Undaunted by wet weather, the band members travelled to East Egmont to play a programme at Manganui Hut while the Stratford Mountain Club's senior ski-ing championships were being held on the Manganui track. Owing to the weather, however, the championships had to be postponed, but the handsmen I decided to continue with their pro- | gramme. Not content with playing at 5000 feet, Bandsmen G. Trott and G, | Neilsen, cornetists, and P. Wisnewski, double bass player, set off up the mountainside, taking their instruments with them. Reaching the Policeman, they decided to air their notes at that level, After producing several medleys they made their way back to the party at the hut. On their return to the plateau, members of the hand were able to rendei valuable assistance to alpinists after ari accident that took place on the Manganui Gorge track. Mr. S. N. Speck, secretary of the band. was onc the visitors whc went to the Stratford Mountain House tc give the alarm.
