CROPS IN BOROUGH

COUNCIL'S HELP> SOUGHT Co-operation from the New Plymouth Borough Council in preparing plots of land in the borough for sowing root crops was sought by the North Taranaki Council of Primary Production last night. In view of its lack of plant the council was not sure how far it would be able to assist, but the question was referred to the works committee to see what could be done. The production council's request was made by the secretary, Mr. D. le C. Morgan, who said arrangements had been made for the sowing and care of the crops on areas which were being lent for the purpose, but some help was needed in preparing the land for sowing and the placement officer suggested the use of scheme 13 labour if the council were prepared to undertake supervision. The farmers were making a splendid effort, I but a bad autumn would kill a great deal of that effort so that supplementary fodder was of great importance. Institutions were prepared to finance the scheme and the nett proceeds would be paid into patriotic funds, it was stated. The council had no machinery suitable for the purpose and no borses, the Mayqr, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, pointed out. It might cost the council something for extra wages. The council wanted to help but he did not quite see how far it would be able to go. He felt sure he could borrow some machinery, Mr. Morgan commented in again urging the importance of the proposal. In the opinion of Crs. H. H. Moller and F. S. Grayling it would be more economical to get a properly equipped contractor to do the work and Mr. R. Day, borough inspector, informed the council that a man of that type was working with the unemployed. Cr. Moller pointed out that most scheme 13 men would probably not be qualified to do the work.
