"alarming increase" The fact that the farmer had to meet ; the ever-increasing costs of living and j of production, while the price received for his produce remained stable, was brought before the North Taranaki executive of the Farmers' Union on Friday by remits from several branches. The chairman, ;Mr..'H. E. Blyde, stated that the matter would be brought before the dairy conference, which was to he held shortly. Remits from Mangorei and Stratford in connection with the change over from butter to cheese were combined and unanimously carried as follows:— "That the costs to farmers, who are changing from home separation to whole milk supply for the purpose of increasing the manufacture of cheese, be a national liability and that the branch affirm the principle of a levy over the whole industry of 50 per cent. of the costs, the other 50 per cent. to be paid from the Consolidated Fund, and that all such expenses be exempt from all taxation. :t was stated that such expenses should be treated as1 farm expenditure and be deductible from nett income in income tax returns.
