WIN FOR, S. McKAIN

LEAGUE CYCLE RACING Fine weather favoured the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League for the third race of the final road series of the 1940 season on Saturday. There were only seven starters, six of whom finished the 34-mile course from Avenue Road to Tariki and back. Offieials on duty were Mr. L. E. Smith, referee: Mr. D. George, starter and timekeeper; Mr. J. Bond and Mr. J. Cooper, road stewards; Mr. A. Gable, secretary. The limit riders, J. McConnell and L. Standing were caught about a mile before reaching Tariki by L. Zimmerman and S. McKain the eight-minute men. The pace was too stiff for Standing and he dropped back from this bunch after the turn, leaving the other three as the leaders, G. Candy liding on his own off the six-minutc mark lost a minute on the eighl-minutc men on Ihe outward journey, and retired from the race about half way liome. F. Candy and L. McKain from the scratch mark did not create any records on the outward ride, taking almost as long as the leaders to do the distance. They clipped about three minutes off riding time on the harder return journey, the head wind slowing the front riders up a bit. Time takcn to Tariki by the eightminute men was 43 minutes, and the scratch men 42). minutes. At Albert Road on the way back S. McKain hit a wheel and fcll henvily, he remounted quickly with Ihe intention of ehnsing Zimmerman and McConnell, who, howevcr on seeing he was ablo to carry on. very sportingly waiteti for him. The three finished in one bunch in the following order: S. McKain '8m. ) time Ihr 34m. 30s 1. J. McConnell (18m.) 2, L. Zimmerman (8m.) 3. L. McKain (scr.) time Ihr 31m. 46s 4. Wheel between first and .second. length. Trophy points are now: L. McKain 9. S. McKain 6, T. Foote 6. F. Candy 4, G. I Candy 3, J. McConnell 3, L. Zimmerman 2.
