PATEA RIFLE CLUB

TERMINATION OF SEASON It was decided to close down the Patea miniature rifle club for the duration of the war at the annual meeting of the club on Saturday. Mr. J. Bates moved that the sale of ammunition be left in the secretary's hands and the rifles be loaned to Mr. D. Roots for the benefit of the Patea rifle club. Mr. N. Coad seconded the motion, which was carried. The opinion was expressed that as a number of the club's keenest members were on overseas service and others likely to be called up. it was useless to try and carry on at present. It was essential that young men be taught to shoot, said Mr. Roots, and this could be furthered by allowing the club's rifles to be used by the rifle club. It was decided that the present ofTicers hold office for the duration of the war. The asscts of the club totalled £45 7s 8d. with no liabilities. Congratulations on a successful year were contained in the executive's report, although the season was short owing to | | the war, as the shed was required for training purposes. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £9 2s 8d as compared with £18 16s 6d the previous year. This, however. ' was taking into consideration ammunition purchases of I

£13 10s, so that the balance was a creditable one, there being still some 5250 rounds on hand. Owing to the Shortness of the year no club trophies were competed for, with the exception of the Allcomers' Cup, which- was won by J. Huston with a possible. Three team shoots were held on the local range with Kohi, Hawera and Wanganui, the local team being victorious on' each occasion. Owing to the benzine restrictions coming into force at this period no return matches could be played. Thanks were accorded the domain board for the use of the shed, the women and all who had assisted to make the year successful. Had it not been for the war the executive felt that the club would have had a record 'season. Mr. N. R. Coad presided.
