A latter to a resident at Hawera from a member of the crew of the liner which brought 170 children to Wellington this week tells of the sympathetic interest of the American Red Cross in the evacuation of British children to the Dominions. "When the ship arrived at Panama," he said, "the American Red Cross put on board 80 quarts of ice cream and 90 dollars' worth of candy for the children. They were taken on sightseeing tours by American citizens at Panama, and accounts of the ship's arrival were in all the papers, discounting the announcement made by Lord Haw-Haw from Berlin that the liner had been sunk ofS Panama." Kaponga Lodge Meeting. The Loyal Kaponga Lodge M.U.I.O.O.F. was well attended when the fortnightly meeting was held. A ballot for a new member was favourable and another nomination was received. N.G. Crowley in r-cognition of her services to the lodge. Soldiers' Parcels. Last week the Patea patriotic social committee dispatched 37 parcels containing comforts for local soldiers overseas. Kaponga Boy Scout Troop. Thirty-six Scouts are on the roll of the newly-formed Kaponga troop. The Scoutmaster, Mr. W. Saggers, reported that- good progress was being made with tenderfoot passes when the committee last met. It was hoped to obtain uniforms shortly and the troop is to be visited by Commissioner Cooksey shortly. The secretary reported that £1 18s was in hand. It was announced that the Scouts and Guides were co-operating in preparation for a concert for patriotic purposes.
