SOME SURPRISE WINS AQUILA IN TRIAL PLATE

Auckland. Last Night. The each way favourite, Lapidarian, attempted to win the Kinsland Hurdles from end to end, only to tire in the run from the last fence and be beaten into third place by the second fancy, Midland and Race Whip. Midland was a fair way back in the eariy stages and after being fifth at the turn finished nicely to win by half a length from Race Whip, who beat Lapidarian by a similar margin. Race Whip made a strong run at the end on the outside and King Musk, always handy, was a creditable fourth, followed by Small Boy, Ringshot, Cappy and Kaiwaka. who was never dangerous. Small Boy should be improved by the race and so may be Ringshot. Vaalso fell at the second fence. Cappy and Valspear were prominent for over a mile and then retired. Aqulla Surprises. Finishing strongly well out from the rails, Aquila brought off a surprise in the Trial Plate, for which the VentureVillage Queen bracket and Glen Connell were the favourites. Aquila was a fair way back sixth at the turn and won going away. He has had only a few starts and has been very patiently handled by A. Winder. Venture and Air Port were smartest to begin and when th3 field had ' settled down they gave way to Expellant and Glen Connell, who were the leaders into the straight from Venture and Air Port, with an interval of a couple of lengths to Rara Avis. Foxola and Aquila. Inside the distance Glen Connell began to weaken and Rara Avis ran to Expellant. Aquila then appeared in the middle of the track and he won going away from Expellant, who beat Rara Avis by three-quarters of a length. Venture, wide out, was fourth followed by Rey Lu, Foxola, Air Port and Sir General.

Monte Cristo's Performance. A nice performance was registered by the each-way favourite, Monte Cristo, in winning the Henderson Handicap. After Money " Spinner and Monte Cristo had shown out early, Sir Lysander and Te Haka, who went fast from No. 23, soon took the lead and they made play into the straight clear of Monte Cristo, Hum a Song, Mysito and Chain Acre. Near the distance Monte Cristo ran to the leaders and he won nicely from Chain Acre, who also ran on well. Kindergarten, who looked a little above himself, finished splendidly for third and Princess Val was fourth ahead of Hum a Song, Te .Haka, whose early effort told, Kraal, Selwyn and Fairfield. Mysito was well up to the straight and then tired, being not quite ready. Clinch in Splendid Finish. It was with a splendid finishing effort that the seventh fancy, Clinch, won the Avondale Cup at long odds. Aero King, Gamos, Our Jean and Sly Fox were prominent early from Mintlaw and Beau Repaire. Nearing the half-mile Beau Repaire dashed to the front and he came into the straight just clear of Gamos, Aero King, Our Jean and Coronation, wide out, who were abreast ahead of Mintlaw and Sly Fox with Clinch in the next bunch. Inside the distance it looked as if Beau Repaire, who was being challenged by Our Jean, would prevail, but Clinch came fast and beat him by half a head. Our Jean was threequarters of a length away third and Sly Fox was fourth, closely followed by Mintlaw. Flood Tide, Flying Acre, Erlick and Valamito. Clinch had had an unusually light preparation for a race of this description and caught many of his admirers unawares. Beau Repaire, who should improve with the run, Our Jean and Sly Fox all ran good races. Gamos and Mintlaw looked likely at the turn but failed to run on. Aero King also failed to stay. Coronation made a sharp run on the outside approaching the turn, but the effort was too great and he weakened. Flying Acre was never dangerous.

Miss Baffles Comfortably. The young imported sire, Baffles, received a good advertisement when Miss Baffles, the first of his stock to race, won the Avondale Stakes, for which Kawariki and Tinkletoon were the favourites. Jumping out smartly from No. 2 Miss Baffles led into the straight from Colombo Bay, River Plate, Kawariki, Golden Pay and Greenock. Below the distance Miss Baffles was. just clear and she ran home a comfortable winner from River Plate, who finished gamely. Kawariki held on well for third and Tinkletoon, who drew No. 12, was closer in the fourth position at the finish than at any other stage. She was followed by Declaim, Nuna and Funny Fox, who drew No. 15 and was running on. Beau Leon Shows Form. The three-year-old, Beau Leon, was responsibde for a good performance in. winning the Champion Plate, for which he was a much better favourite than Classic and Tellsom. Classic, Miss Jose and Golden Tom were the early leaders, Classic showing the way into the straight to Miss Jose, Golden Tom, Silver Stick, Odtaa and Beau Leon. Once in line for the post Beau Leon soon ran to the leaders and stalled off a determined challenge from Greek Queen, who came from a good way back after a slow beginning. Classic, weakening at the end, was a length away third and Tellsom was a good fourth ahead of Odtaa, Native Chief, Silver Stick and Bronze Emerald.

Marshall Hall Narrowly. An exciting finish in the Flying Handicap saw Marshall Hall, one of the favourites, prevail by half a head from Grandora, who beat Phaleron by a head. Tne thrse place-getters are all three-year-olds and so is the fourth. Gay Miss, who was favourite on the win machine, and Maxam reached the front quickly and they were the leaders into the straight from Grandora, Brazen Bold, Blonde Princess, Queen City and Phaleron. The field bunched at the distance, where Phaleron made a dash on t'.ie rails and the leaders were weakening. Marshall Hall did best in the last half furlong and just beat Grandora, who outstayed Phaleron. Gay Miss was close up, followed by Foxmond. Maxam, Brazilian and' Queen City. I Don Quex in Fine Finish. Another fine finish was provided in 'the Swanson Handicap, the second fancy |staying on soundly, to score narrowly. , Beeswing, Minority, Hunter's Night and Don Quex were prominent early, Beeswing leading into the straight from Gas Acre, Joan Peel, Don Quex, Minority and Gaine's Choice. Soon after reaching thc straight Joan Peel came through on the rails. only to be outstayed b.v Don Quex, who beat her by a neck. Minority, running on, was another neck away third and Beeswing was fourth. Then followed Esquire, Gaine's Choice and Valley Maid. It was the second win on end for Don Quex, who is much improved. Minority ran a fine race under his big weight and was going on at the finish. Milanion and Hackenschmidl ww« uevw dangerous
