CHRISTMAS PARCELS
INITIAL ARRANGEMBNTS "The question of the sending of Christmas parcels for our troops abroad is one that though it must be taken in hand almost immediately, must receive careful consideration," said the chairman, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, at the meeting of the New Plymouth patriotic committee last night. "As far .as the patriotic societies are concerned the effort will be a Taranaki one and will in no way interfere with any private efforts," he added. Mr. Gilmour intimated that he had obtained' sufficient supplies of tins for New Plymouth and had offers from plumbers to seal them. He stressed the necessity for the preparation of cakes of a suitable type. Messrs. Gilmour and Stainton and Mesdames Gilmour, W. C. Weston and Paton were elected a sub-committee to deal with the matter. On the ground that all efforts should be directed to the benefit of Taranaki men as a wliolo and not to members of elubs, it was decidc*. I to advise the New Plymouth borough council that the committee objected to any clubs being allowed privileges regarding marts and street days. The offer by Mr. P. E. Stainton of a second-hand radio for the men on guard at the Coronation hall was accepted by the committee. A sum approaching £19,000 had been raised at New Plymouth for the various patriotic funds at New Plymouth and in the Taranaki county, stated a report from the treasurer, Mr. F. Davis. For the provincial fund £3484 had been raised, for the fighting services appeal £4094, for the sick and wounded appeal £7384, and for the Spitfire fund £1500, and he understood that the Pierrots had over £2000 in hand.
