MAORIS’ TRIBUTE
LATE POUWHAREUMU TOI Pouwhareumu Toi was buried at the tribal burying grounds with the ritual of the Roman Catholic Church. The gathering, which was one of the largest and most representative yet to hold a tangi on the west coast, paid tribute to a leading elder of the Nga-Ruahine tribe. On Wednesday night visitors from as far north as Waitara and as far south as Waitotara crowded the meeting house to hear orators speaking highly of the departed kaumatua. A party from the Katemarae pa sang traditional chants and services at the pa and graveside were conducted by the Rev. Father J. Durning, Taranaki Maori mission, assisted by by the Rev. Father Carmine (Pungarehu) and the Rev. Father Breen (Manaia). The Taranaki Maori Trust Baard, of which the chief had been a member, was represented by Mr. Hapi Love (Wellington), the board secretary, Mr. W. Wakarua (Hawera), and several other members. The sympathies of the townspeople of Hawera were conveyed to the friends and near relatives by the Mayor, Mr. L. H. Clapham.
