HAWERA TRACKS

marton candidates Fine weather conditions prevailed for training operations at Hawera yesterday. The outside of the course proper with trestes 40 feet out was available for fast work. The going was improved but still holding. Early workers were Stencil, Sea Link, .War Lap, Filbret and H. Mills' Kiosk filly, who were all given solid pace work. Min Vaals (Toki) and Viracious (Turu) galloped five furlongs in. lm 10s. Retort (McDonald) sprinted two furlongs in 25!/as. Retort's outing at Awapuni has sharpened her up and she is to have another race at Marton. L. George gave. his two-year-old Miss Phaleron her fiirst fast work, Val Pere accompanying the filly in two sprints up the straight. The second one was a satisfactory effort. Val Pere, usually a lazy worker, showed plenty of dash and should not be long coming to hand. Friesland (Holland) and Tavoy (Mills) were given solid pace work on the sand, both showing eagern ess to increase the pace. Winsome Lu (Reilly), after taking 43s for her first three furlongs, completed five in lm ll!6s, going well within herself. L. George will continue to race Winsome Lu while the tracks remain soft and she is to have her next outing at Marton, a course where she has previously performed well. Notium (W. Grindlay) continues to make good progress. in his schooling effovts and jumped three hurdles, the first two brilliantly. At the third he showed a little hesitation but Grindlay got him over safely. Silver Gift (Whiro) is a much improved mare and impressed by her forward running at New Plymouth. Handling the easy going well, she reeled off two furlongs comfortably in 26s. Silver gift is to accompany Winsome Lu to Marton. Air Flight (McDonald) was given her first sprint and showed she has not forgotten how to gallop, dashing up the straight two furlongs easily in 27s. Surveyor-General is still working round the roads. A splendid round of .the schooling hurdles was performed by Resingold (S.' Grindlay) and Chiltern (W. Grindlay), both jumping fast and cleanly. Chiltern's effort was a big improvement on his previous one and pleased his ownertrainer, B. La Pouplq, who has been very patient with the big Illumination gelding. Another horse to have his first fast work was Chief Lord (Ryan), who sprinted two furlongs with the two-year-olds King Chief (McDonald) and Battle Dress (Mills). Chief Lord shaped impressively and shaded Ring Chief at the finish with Battle Dress three lengths back in 2514s. Martene, Le Marquise, Gold Grip, Val Boy and Pink Lass among others were out doing routine exercise work. Gitana Lass hexton) . sprinted three furlongs in 41s. Golden Ring (Mills) continues to please and covered three furlongs in 40 V23 comfortably. Royal Starr II., who has been freely nominated for Marton, is being given road exercise for the present. An addi.'ion to R. Brough's team is a well-grown two-year-old colt by Defoe from Remora, a Callaghan mare.
