ALTON DISTRICT NEWS

The home of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gibbs, Alton, was the scene of a party to celebrate the engagement of their daughter Ivy to Mr. C. M. Opie. The evening was spent in flag five hundred and community singing. At the winning card table were Mrs. M. Atkinson, Miss E. Foreman, Mr. M. Atkinson and Mr. E. Bowen. The health of the couple was proposed by Mr. A. Illingworth. The Alton branch of the. W.D.F.U. held a euchre party and dance. There were 14 tables engaged in play. The winners were Mrs. A. Illingworth and Mr G Berg. Dance music was played by ' Mrs. Tidswell. Mr. J. W. O'Byrne was master of ceremonies During the evening the president, Mrs V. Williamson, made a presentation of knitted comforts to Messrs. C. M. Opie and J. Furby. Mrs. R. Opie, Ashburton, who was the guest of Mrs. A. J. Gibbs, has ' now left for Fiji. Mr. G. Garnett is in the Patea --hospital. Mr. G.^Foreman has returned to Palmerston North after spending a holiday with his parents. Mr. J. Furby recently visited Auckland.
