DIFFICULT ACCESS
ELTHAM COUNTY PROBLEM Two washouts and an old bridge limited to two tons were difficulties which made access via a track to his Tirimoana area farm impos.sible to vehicular traffic, said Mr. Jones, when he waited upon the Eltham County Council yesterday requesting that measures be taken to provide him with better access. The chief difficulties were the carriage of fertilisers to the property and the carrying out of normal farm operations such as the do-cking of lambs. • After some difficulty in locating the farm on the survey map, the council discussed the possibility of an alternative route, and finally decided that the road and other possibilities should be inspected by the Eltham riding members, Crs. W. B. Robertson and E. R. Knuckey, and the engineer, Mr. T. A. Irwin. "That this council makes strong objections to the Prime Minister on the proposed legislation to restrict the hours of shops and offices; and that he be requested to leave the matter as it exists under the present legislation." The council passed this resolution when correspondence was received from Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., pointing out that it was proposed to effect legislation giving the Arbitration Court powers to restrict the hours of shops and offices. It was stated by cuncillors that such powers by the Arbitration Court would probably result in the proposal to do away with late shopping nights and the opening of shops and offices on Saturday mornings being carried out. Appreciation of the interest Mr. Wilkinson had shown in the matter was expressed by the council, and it was decided to forward him a copy of the resolution which would be sent to the Prime Minister.
